Twenty-five winners will receive a real LB tattoo, applied in-store by Outer Limits Tattoo artist to celebrate Bixby Knolls’ First Friday Series, July 6

As part of Bixby Knolls’ First Friday series, Long Beach Clothing Co. has teamed with Kari Barba’s Outer Limits Tattoo & Piercing of Long Beach to tattoo twenty-five lucky winners.

On Friday, July 6th, 2012, the first twenty-five Long Beach residents to supply the names of five officially recognized civic areas within the city of Long Beach will receive a complimentary Long Beach “LB” tattoo, applied by a master tattooist. Tattoos will be applied inside Long Beach Clothing Co.’s retail location on Atlantic Avenue.

“This is no easy task,” says seasoned tattoo artist Billy Sarno. “It’s going to take some real coordination between me and my assistant. But one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Sarno will have just five hours to tattoo the 2 ½” tall trademarked cursive “LB” on all twenty-five participants.

“My goal is to sneak my way up to the front of the line,” says Blair Cohn, Executive Director of the Bixby Knolls Business Association.

Who: 25 winners, Blair Cohn – Exec. Director, Bixby Knolls Business Association; Kari Barba – Owner, Outer Limits Tattoo; Billy Sarno – Tattoo Artist
When: Friday, July 6th, 5-10PM, First come first served

Long Beach Clothing Co.’s Tattoo Collection History

“What started out as a goof became a real, jaw-dropping collection,” says Jay Tilles, Long Beach Clothing Co. co-founder. “Back in 2003 when we opened, we shot a few photos of our customers with Long Beach tattoos and placed them in little book atop our front counter. To say thank you for proudly displaying permanently their city in ink, we figured the least we could do was to thank them with a lifetime discount on merchandise. Flash forward a decade and more than 1,500 tattoo photos later; we’ve created the largest collection of Long Beach tattoos.”

“What’s even more amazing,” continues Tilles “is that a fair number of those people were tattooed in order to receive the store discount.”

Outer Limits Tattoo & Body Piercing History

Tattooing since 1983, Kari Barba had dreams of restoring Bert Grimm’s historic tattoo studio. Grimm’s is heralded as the oldest tattoo shop in the U.S., and was known for playing a big part in Long Beach’s Navy history by tattooing hundreds of local sailors. After years of restoration hundreds of hours tracking down vintage artifacts, Barba proudly opened the Outer Limits Tattoo and museum in 2007, at the very same location at Grimm’s once stood.
